Director of Safety and Health, D&D
Charlotte, NC
April 2017
THE SCENARIO
The largest nuclear waste company in the United States experienced accelerated growth within their Decommissioning and Decontamination business unit. Utilities and infrastructure owners across the United States had become eager to return nuclear power plant sites to green spaces.
Operations were increasingly complex, and the project sites were scattered coast to coast. An executive level Safety and Health professional, with nuclear plant and hazardous material experience, was needed to oversee all the sites, ensure projects were completed with the utmost safety, and implement procedures that would support the continued growth of the business unit.
THE CHALLENGE
Although there are many great safety professionals in the US nuclear industry, few organizations had the complexity of our client. It was apparent that there was a void of professionals who possessed the level of experience required but who were not already in Senior Vice President roles with the world’s largest industrial construction and EPC contractors.
THE SOLUTION
The relatively small size of heavy industrial construction companies that perform work at nuclear sites allowed us to contact every senior manager and executive professional who held environmental, health, or safety positions at relevant organizations.
THE OUTCOME
Candidates were considered from across the country but a gentleman in Charlotte, who was leading EH&S for the largest commercial nuclear construction project in decades, was willing to entertain exploratory conversations. The client President recognized the candidate from past projects and offered him the job on the spot.
